River Plan meeting TONIGHT!
Tuesday, May 15th 5pm-7pm

Please come tonight and express your support for a trail along the Willamette River in the North Reach. (meeting place listed below)

>From the River Plan website:
[The River Plan is a comprehensive multi-objective plan for the land along the Willamette River. It is an update of the [1987] Willamette Greenway Plan, zoning code and design guidelines, which serve as Portland’s compliance with State Planning Goal 15 and were last updated in 1987. The width of the planning area varies from place to place but generally includes all land within approximately ¼ mile of the river (view North Reach boundaries map).]

the npGREENWAY vision map outlines where we would like to see the trail. Click here to download a copy.

npGREENWAY has been involved in the River Plan since nearly the beginning. Tonight’s meeting is pivotal for those efforts. Come testify and support the VISION! There will be many people there representing the industry along the river. We want to make sure there is also a balanced representation of neighbors and community members that would like to see the trail be built along the river.

Here are two excerpts from the agenda that we believe are key to fostering riverside trails:

npGREENWAY community ride / meeting
hursday, May 31st 7pm-9pm

npGREENWAY will be hosting our next community meeting in the form of a bicycle ride.

Join us for a bike ride along the future North Willamette Greenway Trail. The ride will include a short existing paved trail, as well as portions through Willamette Cove–a former industrial site now shaded by Cottonwood trees. We will continue south along the edge of the working Willamette River, through Swan Island, onto the Eastbank Esplanade and return atop Willamette Blvd enjoying sweeping vistas across the Willamette River and the West Hills.

>From the path, riders will be able to view barges, ocean freighters, ships in dry dock and fishermen’s small boats; all in a setting with Cormorants sunning on industrial piers and hearty Blue Herons poking along the shoreline.

This tour will be on unimproved trails and roads. Please ride either a mountain bike or a road bike with heavy city tires. Some short stretches will need to be traversed on foot. Due to the late evening return time bike lights are recommended.

Meet at the end of N. Burlington Ave. in the BES Water Lab parking lot. The trip is free, but donations to support npGREENWAY are gladly accepted. For more information email info@npGreenway.org or call 503-823-4099

Set Trail Priorities at the
Metro Bond Measure Open House

Wednesday, June 20th 6pm – 8pm

In November 2006 voters directed the Metro Council to extend a region-wide program to acquire natural areas to protect water quality and wildlife habitat and enhance public access to nature. Now it’s time to set priorities for 27 regional natural areas and trails targeted for acquisition.

Come to the open house in June to view maps, learn more about the areas and to join npGREENWAY in asking Metro to acquire trail easements for the North Portland Greenway Trail.

Hosted by Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder
St. Johns Community Center
8427 N. Central St., Portland
Featured areas: Columbia Slough, Willamette River Greenway, Forest Park Connections
