There will be a Tree Planting this Saturday February 11th from 11:00AM to 4:00 PM to “top off” the Department of Environmental Quality’s (DEQ) cleanup effort at the former McCormick & Baxter “Super Fund” site.
Children are welcome. Native Trees and Shrubs, Gloves, Shovels and refreshments will be provided. There will be shuttle busses running from Portsmouth and Willamette Blvd near the Chiles Center at the University of Portland.
This is an excellent opportunity to see the river, formulate your own vision of what the trail will look like, and meet your North Portland Neighbors. Take the opportunity to talk to the people you are working with about how nice it will be when we can walk and bike through the area on a water level trail connecting Cathedral Park to the Eastbank Esplanade.
Governor Kulongoski and others will speak at noon.
If you would like more information, please contact one of the CORE TEAM or Mikell O’Mealy, Portland Harbor Outreach Coordinator, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality at 503.229.6590 or omealy.mikell@deq.state.or.us

Thanks to everyone who came out today err… I guess it is yesterday now.
It was great to see so many neighbors that I haven’t met. I was the one there with three kids in tow. Jason Starman and his family were also there and gracious to help wrangle my little ones. It was wonderful to get to know a fellow npGREENWAYer better.
We were in ‘Planting Group 6’ and were taken out to plant shortly after we got there. This was great for our 1-6 year old partners, but not so great for catching any of the comments by the Governor, Mayor, Commissioner or others.
I also met Jeff Cogen who is running for Multnomah County Commissioner–he was part of ‘Group 6’. I told him about npGREENWAY and followed up with an e-mail asking for his support.
One little suggestion for event organizers–next time, if we are going to advertise that gloves are provided, please have kid size gloves available as well–or ask people to bring their own. We would have brought our own kid work gloves, but did not because they were going to be provided. The shovels, food, shuttles and everything else was excellent!
Please post here if you have any comments about the day’s events.
